I have been in love with the church all my life. Both my father and grandfather were Presbyterian ministers, and going to church as a child was as familiar as brushing my teeth. Though I studied religion in college in the late 60s, pastoral ministry was the farthest thing from my mind – because I had never seen a woman pastor. But then the college chaplain encouraged me to explore the possibilities. During seminary, I worked with a junior high youth group, and the struggles, joys, questions and energy of those teenagers called me into ministry.
I was ordained in 1974. Over the past 45 years, I have served in 7 congregations in various pastoral roles – large, small, and in between. When our children were small, my husband and I shared one call in order to share parenting as well. For 17 years, I served as Pastor/Head of Staff in Bethesda, Maryland – where ministry included a Jewish/Christian partnership sharing our sacred space, an active exploration of the connection between faith and science, a prophetic embrace of gay pastors and staff, and a microfinance project with women in Uganda. From 2006-2015, I served as the General Presbyter of the Hudson Valley Presbytery in New York, with pastoral and organizational oversight of 85 congregations. After moving to St. Louis in 2015, I have served as Interim Pastor at Second Presbyterian church, and Parish Associate at the Webster Groves Presbyterian church.
In 2003-2004, I was honored to serve as the elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCUSA. I represented our denomination across the country and around the world, discovering the beautiful diversity and intelligent, compassionate and justice oriented ministry that the PCUSA embraces.
I received my BA at Wellesley College, my Master of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School, and my Doctor of Ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary.
I am married to the Rev. Sim Gardner, a retired hospital chaplain, also ordained in the PCUSA. We have a son who is an environmental attorney, and a daughter who is an urban educator. With their spouses they have shared with us the energy and wonder of our four grandsons – age 6, 5, 4, and 2.
