Getting to Know You: Mary White Lucy

(The following is a new feature of Chapel Bell, designed to more fully inform us of the interesting lives of fellow parishioners.)

GETTING TO KNOW YOU...

No doubt you've seen her on Sunday mornings. A lovely, elegant lady with a white chignon regularly seated near the front of Ladue Chapel's sanctuary.

She is 98-year old Mary White Lucy.

Mary White was born in Columbia, Tennessee where she had a large extended family. She has many fond memories of growing up, spending great times with her sister Josie and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mary White met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Lucy, when she was only 14 years old and he was fifteen.  They met at a dance held by his military academy. Six years later in 1947, they married after Bob graduated from the United States Naval Academy.  Mary White left Peabody College and embarked on a lifelong career as a wife, mother, homemaker, and volunteer.

She supported Bob as he served as a naval officer, mostly in Asia, for 27 years. Stateside, they served at numerous bases; Quantico in Virginia, Camp Pendleton in California and at Camp LeJeune in North Carolina. Colonel Lucy's final assignment was in Washington, D.C., where he earned a law degree. He finished his military career as the legal advisor and legislative assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "I loved being in D.C., at the heart of everything", said Mary White.

Along the way, Mary White and Bob had four children; Meredith, now a clinical psychologist in Atlanta; Celia, a homemaker in Washington, DC; John, also a clinical psychologist in Atlanta; and Bobby, an artist living in Woodstock, New York. Mary White has seven grandchildren.

Upon completion of Bob's military career, he joined the St. Louis-based law firm, Bryan Cave, and he and Mary White got busy again making a life for their family in St. Louis. They were influenced to join Ladue Chapel by an aunt of Bob's. They moved to The Gatesworth retirement community shortly before Bob's death in 2021. "I miss him every day, but I do enjoy living at The Gatesworth", she says. Mary White works out twice a week at its fitness center and enjoys Gatesworth special events and resident gatherings.

Mary White Lucy has seen many changes in our nation through the years, but her faith in God has been a constant in her life. She always wears a smile and has a twinkle in her bright blue eyes. So, please make a point to introduce yourself if you haven't met Mary White. It will be a highlight of your week!
